Distribution: western Atlantic, from Massachusetts and Bermuda to Trinidad and Tobago. Common throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Replaced by the barber surgeonfish (Acanthurus bahianus) in Brazil, Ascension Island and St Helena Island.
