Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Very common in Indonesia and the Philippines.

Protoreaster nodosus coloration is variable, from white/light brown to bright red, sometimes dark.

Replaced in Western Indian Ocean by Protoreaster linckii.
